To support K-12 teachers in addressing the needs of students as they develop literacy knowledge and skills, Savvas' Author and Genre Studies blend comprehensive instructional materials, professional development, and embedded on-site services.
Capitalizing on the synergy between reading and writing, with Savvas' Author and Genre Studies students enhance topic and genre knowledge through reading, strengthening their comprehension with discussion and response writing. They analyze the author's craft and borrow writing strategies, learning to create authentic pieces that effectively communicate new knowledge.
The Author and Genre Studies include carefully sequenced, coherent lessons designed to expand content and literacy knowledge. Lessons within these units follow a workshop structure that is characterized by an Opening, Work Time, and Closing. Teachers learn to establish this predictable learning environment as well as additional daily rituals, routines, and artifacts, all of which support classroom management and encourage student independence and peer collaboration.
Savvas' Author and Genre Studies include four main components:
Savvas' Author and Genre Studies are designed to meet both individual, small group, and whole-group needs through assessment and ongoing progress monitoring. Foundation Units and Genre Studies include pre- and post-assessments to measure student growth. Rubrics are used in all instructional materials. These guidelines for student work present the criteria needed to meet certain levels of quality and give students a detailed and objective way not only to understand each assignment's requirements, but to engage in collaborative peer discussion as well as self- and peer-assessment.
Teachers use the insights gathered from analyzing student work against rubrics as an integral part of their planning processes, to refine the focus for whole class instruction, to guide the structure and goals of small group work, and to meet individual student needs. In addition, tasks that allow students to demonstrate progress and their understanding of specific strategies and skills are highlighted in the teacher materials and result in student work products that teachers can formatively assess and grade (e.g., book talks, oral presentations, process writing pieces, on-demand writing pieces).
In addition to the studies, monographs, and assessments, Savvas' Author and Genre Studies offer educators targeted professional development consisting of an initial training for teachers and school/district leaders as they learn to use the resources, as well as optional on-site coaching. On-site coaching helps integrate professional development into the daily work of the school. It aligns the professional development with the school's instructional systems and provides just-in-time differentiated instruction that matches teachers' needs and instructional goals.
