To support K-12 teachers in addressing the needs of students as they develop literacy knowledge and skills, Savvas' Author and Genre Studies blend comprehensive instructional materials, professional development, and embedded on-site services.

Capitalizing on the synergy between reading and writing, with Savvas' Author and Genre Studies students enhance topic and genre knowledge through reading, strengthening their comprehension with discussion and response writing. They analyze the author's craft and borrow writing strategies, learning to create authentic pieces that effectively communicate new knowledge.

The Author and Genre Studies include carefully sequenced, coherent lessons designed to expand content and literacy knowledge. Lessons within these units follow a workshop structure that is characterized by an Opening, Work Time, and Closing. Teachers learn to establish this predictable learning environment as well as additional daily rituals, routines, and artifacts, all of which support classroom management and encourage student independence and peer collaboration.


Savvas' Author and Genre Studies include four main components:

  1. Foundation Units: Teachers use the lessons in the Foundation Units to set up a classroom environment supportive of college and career readiness expectations. They introduce craft, explain the use of mentor or touchstone texts, develop rubrics to revise student work, etc. Units and lessons target standards for Englsh Language Arts and they are grade level specific. Teachers learn to organize their classroom around a set of daily routines and rituals that simultaneously help manage behavior and move students toward becoming independent learners. Lessons establish a workshop structure comprised of an opening, work time, and closing. During each segment, students collaborate with peers in partnerships as well as small group and whole group settings.

  2. Genre Studies: Genre Studies develop students' skills in reading and writing one specific genre or text type. At the elementary school level the genre studies familiarize students with the reading and writing of key genres/text types; at the middle school level, the genre studies introduce students to writing for the world beyond the classroom; at the high school level they prepare students for the types of writing they will need to do in college and the workplace.

  3. Author Studies: Author Studies allow students to "get to know" a published author. They closely read and analyze several texts written by one author and they read across texts, making connections and developing conclusions about the content and the author. They also mimic the author's craft, using borrowed strategies to compose their own texts. The Author Studies support students as they demonstrate an understanding of the texts they are reading while producing standards-meeting essays in opinion/argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative genres.

  4. Literacy Monographs: Provided for reading and writing, these monographs are concise teacher tutorials for individual focus areas. Although they are information-packed, they are easily navigated by teachers, readily used independently or in teacher meetings. Examples of monograph topics include: Independent Reading; Read-Aloud, Think-Aloud; Reading Conferences; Book Discussion Groups; Drafting; Revision Groups; Writing Conferences. Each monograph contains a "what and why" for each focus area as well as a myriad of strategies for implementing in the classroom.


Savvas' Author and Genre Studies are designed to meet both individual, small group, and whole-group needs through assessment and ongoing progress monitoring. Foundation Units and Genre Studies include pre- and post-assessments to measure student growth. Rubrics are used in all instructional materials. These guidelines for student work present the criteria needed to meet certain levels of quality and give students a detailed and objective way not only to understand each assignment's requirements, but to engage in collaborative peer discussion as well as self- and peer-assessment.

Teachers use the insights gathered from analyzing student work against rubrics as an integral part of their planning processes, to refine the focus for whole class instruction, to guide the structure and goals of small group work, and to meet individual student needs. In addition, tasks that allow students to demonstrate progress and their understanding of specific strategies and skills are highlighted in the teacher materials and result in student work products that teachers can formatively assess and grade (e.g., book talks, oral presentations, process writing pieces, on-demand writing pieces).

Professional Development

In addition to the studies, monographs, and assessments, Savvas' Author and Genre Studies offer educators targeted professional development consisting of an initial training for teachers and school/district leaders as they learn to use the resources, as well as optional on-site coaching. On-site coaching helps integrate professional development into the daily work of the school. It aligns the professional development with the school's instructional systems and provides just-in-time differentiated instruction that matches teachers' needs and instructional goals.

Our on-site coaching includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Supporting effective use of program resources, explaining how they work, modeling their application (e.g., co-planning, co-teaching, and debriefing lessons), and helping school staff become experts (e.g., analyzing student work and using that to plan for instruction)

  • Helping school leadership teams and teachers use data to pinpoint student needs and identify the right kind of interventions and strategies to improve performance
