Overview


While the demands of the Common Core Standards raise the bar for deeper mathematical proficiency, how will struggling students succeed if they do not have a solid math foundation?

Math Navigator builds on students' prior knowledge with scaffolded instruction to find the root of every misconception that prevents them from fully grasping math concepts. With online assessments that identify misconceptions, the program drills down to the students' way of thinking, revises their understanding of mathematical concepts, and monitors progress.

Math Navigator helps students develop the eight practices specified in the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice. For example, the program teaches students to:

  • Justify their thinking, critique the thinking of others, and reevaluate their positions based on feedback.
  • Model situations with equations and use diagrams, tables, and graphs to represent situations.
  • Look for patterns so they can identify problems as belonging to particular categories.

Math Navigator is derived from Six Main Premises:


  1. Prior Knowledge and Misconceptions
    Math Navigator places an emphasis on prior knowledge and revising misconceptions.
  2. Targeted Concepts
    Math Navigator engages students in a deeper study of fewer, more critical concepts. It requires students to interact with mathematics, while balancing work with concepts, problem solving, and skills.
  3. The Algebraic Approach to Reviewing Arithmetic
    Students learn mathematics in a way that familiarizes them with the algebraic structure of mathematics. It prepares students for more advanced mathematics while incorporating the foundational aspects as well.
  4. The Language-Rich Environment
    Students collaborate and talk about mathematics in a language-rich environment to deepen and accelerate their learning. Then they refine their understanding and make new knowledge gains visible to others.
  5. Better Learners of Mathematics
    Research shows that students learn best when they know what to expect. Routines and rituals, the premises of each lesson, give students confidence to know what is expected. They also help students become more productive learners who share the attitudes, habits of mind, and learning techniques of effective critical thinkers, which ultimately lead to improved performance.
  6. Instructional Support
    Math Navigator provides comprehensible support to session leaders by offering detailed instructional guidance, ELL support, and a variety of both formal and informal assessments. Math Navigator assessments and answer keys can be downloaded for paper / pencil administration and hand scoring.
